American Armed Forces Conducts Lethal Strike in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths
As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Strikes
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Only on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The administration has faced increasing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the leader “aims to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current government.
