Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to independently develop this new product within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company
The recent development escalates the ongoing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, that closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created several years back for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to develop other ice cream flavors that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
