Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined initialism surfaced a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it refutes each claim it is implicated in. Yet as young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed togetherness has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
