Her Royal Highness's Yearly Festive Carol Concert Spotlights Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will listen to a mix of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for food banks.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
