Israeli citizens commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
Citizens have gathered around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled official remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official said the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Issues in Discussions
- An enduring ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Future governance of the territory
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place seems like home anymore and until every captive return none of us will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home again, we can relax again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise needed for the captives to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about the majority of the population desire the war to finish in exchange for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of the music event, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality areas and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.
"When the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"We are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his face on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city reported two more victims had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, medics stated.
