NY Launches Reporting Tool for Public to Submit Immigration Videos After Arrests of 4 American Citizens
The state attorney general has launched a recent reporting form encouraging citizens to submit images and footage of ICE operations across the state. This move follows a shortly after a high-profile immigration operation rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting mass protests.
US Citizens Held During ICE Operation
A US congressman announced during a news conference that four American citizens were arrested and detained for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Rallies erupted in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen is entitled to live without fear," the AG stated in a release.
"Anyone who observed and recorded ICE activity recently, I urge you to provide that material with the authorities. We are committed to assessing these accounts and evaluating any violations of law."
Submission Process
The form provides options to upload photos and videos of the raid, along with a field to note location information. Prior to sending, users must tick a option that confirms that "the attorney general might employ any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The enforcement action, which onlookers say involved dozens of ICE personnel, took place in a famous area of Manhattan where fake products and merchandise are regularly available in large quantities – typically to tourists.
Footage of the operation show multiple hooded and equipped officers securing and holding a man, and forcing aside onlookers. Masses of New Yorkers followed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored truck was observed rolling through the urban roads.
Political Response
In a news conference featuring the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, said that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be arrested for without cause." He noted the individuals were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he said. "This is a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a justification to generate turmoil for federal officials to deploy the troops to prevent violence that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the immigration operation escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the Trump administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It has to end," a political candidate wrote.
New York City community groups spoke out also.
"ICE targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, covered personnel and protective equipment to go after local sellers working to survive. This raid had no relation to community security and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," stated the leader of a advocacy group.
Agency Rules
ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has claimed it does not arrest or detain citizens. However, external research has found that more than 170 citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities during the period of the present government.
Ongoing Trend
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in New York and across the US lately.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the first known raid on an housing center of the current administration. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are widespread along with accusations of aggression and cruel conditions.
Recently, a letter submitted by civil rights groups alleged medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
