Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He contested justice and the legal system prevailed.

A couple of months subsequent to being handed a 27-year sentence for attempting to “destroy” the nation's political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems destined for incarceration.

Imminent Imprisonment

The adjudicated coup-monger – who's been under house arrest in his estate while a set of judicial steps and appeals proceed – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the coming days, during growing speculation that he will be transferred to a infamous maximum security facility.

Historical Comments on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right ex- military man showed little sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we offer those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be fucked, end of story. That's my opinion.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Jail Facility Speculation

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, four of whom this week toured the complex in an obvious bid to discourage the judiciary from banishing him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, stated he predicted the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and feared his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the outcome of a near-fatal knife attack during the last political campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing forty detainees: “It's almost one square metre per prisoner.

“We talked to the prisoners and they complain, naturally, of the awful food,” continued the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the sole person speaking out before the former president’s predicted imprisonment.

Authoring in a leading daily, one more backer, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the biggest wrong in its past”.

“It represents an unfairness that erodes the spirits of many Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.

Divided Popular Opinion

That may be accurate due to the significant backing Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. But his expected imprisonment has also warmed the spirits of numerous individuals who feel he should be imprisoned for plotting to block his successor from taking power – and even plotting to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the sitting president's allied group, said: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to get respectful care – but respectful treatment while incarcerated. He must not persist being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years applauding the severe treatment of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their rights. “Just now has the far-right – which has always argued that human rights should not be for offenders – decided to tour a penitentiary to learn what situations are actually like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting conduct”.

Potential Prison Facilities

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently houses about fourteen thousand inmates, his more likely destination looks to be a nearby prison for officers and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are much more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the spectacular official residence, around 12 miles away.

Based on information, the room Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – about the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre WC with a water facility and a 130 square foot veranda. “He could be allowed to have a television and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” the report indicated.

Partisan Reactions

Senator Lucas criticized the talked-about plan to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his fate in the {
