The Gory Cartoon Movie Ending That Lingers Viewers
Among all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I’ve ever viewed, no other has lingered in my mind quite like the terror-laced finale of a graphically gory and highly provocative 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, the Spain-based writer-director crafted a grim, bleak and frequently brutal world with a few small , forlorn glimmers of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from a drive to push animation even more, the filmmaker stated that it was rather an effort to convey a universal, multicultural theme about “the mutual source of all wars.”
This theme is expressed by means of a group of colorful pastel bears , clearly based on a popular series of lovable characters.
Being raised in a society built around aggression and the war machine, many of these creatures are consumed by exterminating the mythical beasts, thanks to a holy book which states them they used to be rulers of the woodland, before these creatures drove them out.
Some have not completely fallen for the indoctrination, and prefer to try out narcotics and fornicate in the woods.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these vivid animals display sexual organs , definite libidos.
For a certain notably brutal, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the battle with the unicorns turns into a path toward dominance — and particularly to dominance over his softer, kinder brother Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , a seeming psychopath , and as terror takes over his group and claims his comrades sequentially, he grabs more and more power personally, through ever more gory, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are enduring their own nightmare, through a growing, deadly beast in their woods.
“Initially, it appears as a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker commented. “However it evolves into a more serious and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it becomes a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars begins resembling one of the most playful films by a renowned filmmaker, that uncover a naughty glee in permitting animated figures swear, engage in violence, or sex each other up.
Then it evolves into more akin to a darker film from the same artist, with increasingly graphic violence , a palpable relation to genuine horror of conflict.
In the finale, it’s a full-on theatrical horror bloodbath.
The terror which makes the film an ideal spooky-season watch starts well before than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted fans of gore, for enthusiasts of intense movies who wish to see a movie they have not viewed until now, and are able to withstand a narrative that pulls unflinching brutality.
View it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and that ending will dig deep within you and stay with you.
