The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
