The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular program coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
