What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
